There's a saying, I believe, that things both bad and good come in threes. I'm not entirely certain if I subscribe to that belief, but I suppose there is something to be said for things taken in multiples being superior to ones that stand alone. Or perhaps that's simply the perspective of someone with a particular inclination toward doubles.

Though I admit I'm not averse to singles, if there should happen to be two tennis players in the same vicinity of a court. I enjoyed our game, Shiraishi-kun — let's have another again, soon.

But on the subject of doubles, today marks the second birthday I've had the occasion to observe in Johto. By local reckoning, it seems I'm now sixteen. And it also seems a few members of my roster have seen fit to observe the occasion in a manner...uniquely commemorating that. Thank goodness Marui-kun left me Tensai Jr. upon his departure a few months ago; it appears I'll be making good use of his reserves of Sleep Powder again.

And for the sake of indulging what is almost certainly a sense of morbid curiosity, a question: do any of you, reading this, have multiples of the same species of Pokemon in your roster? And if so, what is the most of any one variety you've ended up with?

I guess it would be lonely without a lot of pokemon around in a large house.

But I mean, people seem to give their newborn pokemon and eggs away. But you keep those.

Not by choice. Lady — my Espeon, and frankly the ringleader of this mess initially — has some particularly strong aversions to the prospect of my giving her children and grandchildren away.

And as I'm rather fond of having the use of both my hands, I generally choose to heed her...rather unique warnings.

But if they keep doing this, you're just going to end up with more and more eevees until you can't have anything else.

For a long time, all the children were boys, and so the thought of another generation to deal with simply wasn't something I had to concern myself with. Unfortunately, the departure of two of my acquaintances left me with a pair of girls, and it seems romantic overtures finally escalated, despite my best efforts to the contrary.

Two girls. And...how many boys?

Six. Though thankfully they seem to be reasonably monogamous.

If I'm not mistaken, one of them is Thalassa's progeny, isn't it? A Dratini, if I recall correctly.

Yeah, Slither. He's...[Oh, a nice way to put this.] Kind of unmotivated.

He gets that from his parents, I would imagine. They do spend a great deal of time in recreation, rather than being heavily motivated toward battling.

Though if he's anything like his mother, I wouldn't soon threaten his interests, lest he prove to have a temper like hers when properly agitated.

Luckily I don't have to, Squish spends half her time trying to motivate him.

What creative names you've developed for them.

They're descriptive! She's a Clefairy. Squishything is descriptive.

Descriptive, though perhaps not particularly motivational. Would you prefer "Blonde Girl", for example, over your own name?

No, but I'm a person. And there are a lot of blonde girls back home so it wouldn't be descriptive.

This is how we name dragons.

Perhaps I'm simply underestimating just how many dragons you're accustomed to dealing with on a regular basis.

Well, the village is full of them. Dozens and dozens. Maybe over a hundred? I've never really counted...

But only Stormfly is mine.

I'm surprised you don't get tired of them after awhile. I've only had a dozen Eevees or so for a considerable length of time, and more than once I've found them nothing short of exhausting.

Well, everyone had their own dragon. And then there were some extras that different people took care of.

It wasn't like taking care of all of them by yourself.
